Perfume brief done!
I am happy to report my penguin brief book cover is finished and handed in, I was writing my evaluation on the train this morning… but glad it’s all done. I will upload an image of it after it has been submitted to penguin. I am pleased with the end result, although I would have liked to see a variation with the arm resting on the perfume title. I wanted the cover to tell you something about the book, but still leave a lot to the imagination of the reader. I used apricots in my cover because the first woman Jean-baptise kills is selling apricots and described in the book as smelling of them. I did not want to use the obvious, such as a dead red haired woman, or a man smelling a perfume bottle because that would be a little boring.
So I am happy with it, I cannot wait to get started on the next brief, my work experience proposal, which involves speaking with top designers in the industry and making some valuable connections. I will take a look at some of my favourite design companies; take a look at maybe finding a placement overseas! Eeeeeek how exciting.
Thanks! Jess
A lot to do, not much time!
So the deadline of my Perfume cover is Monday the 12th! Argh!!!!!
I have done my research, But my ideas are not evolving as much as I would like at all. Every time I have a few hours to sit and do my uni work I am unmotivated and just drained from working all the time. A tired brain does not come up with much! =/
Oh and printers running out of ink everywhere I go is not helping!
I will sort it. Enough excuses! It’s my fault. =)
On the good side should have lots of money for holidays, clothes, car and other awesomeness!
An update on my projects!
It has been too long since my last blog entry, but I have been mega busy! I started a part time job at Costa coffee on the 5th of February, just to help with money while I’m at University, I can’t just rely on my student loan. It does mean I have less spare time to do my work, so I have had to organize my time a bit better.
I have two project deadlines coming up, my Penguin book brief and my Cookbook. I am really enjoying both projects. I emailed a designer called David Pearson last week, he is very heavily connected with Penguin, and so I asked him if he had any advice for the Perfume brief. I was very surprised to receive an email back the following morning.

Hello David,
My name is Jessica Mckeegan, I am a graphic design student from Manchester.
I just wanted to say I find your work very inspiring. I am currently designing a book cover for Patrick Suskind’s Perfume for Penguins 2010 Design award competition.
May I please ask if you have any tips on how to create an original and great cover?
Thank you!
I have not called him yet because I want to wait until I know what direction I am heading with my cover, to ask his opinion.
It was my 21st birthday last Sunday, I had an amazing day thanks to my family and friends! You guys are awesome!
Anyway back to my sketchbook work…
Oh also, went to and amazing exhibition today, Alan Fletcher. I was extremely inspired by his work, I came away from the exhibition knowing how important it is to begin my creative ideas on paper.
Thanks! Jess
